Estate Agents: Are you normal?

estate agents it's time for a new normal
So here we are, in week five of lockdown! Who would have thought it?

If you’re anything like me, you will have moments of complete clarity, where you accept the coronavirus situation and get on with it, and other moments, more extreme moments, where you have a complete wobble and think: ‘What the hell is this? How did we get to this point where we can’t leave our homes, our businesses are closed, and everything is just in limbo?’

You’ll probably then have 10 emotional minutes of feeling angry/sad/frustrated/confused/annoyed (delete as applicable), spend another five minutes trying to scroll past the excessive number of “I’ve made banana bread” posts on your social media feeds, make yourself a cup of coffee, trudge back to your home office…and then you’ll feel okay again.

This is perfectly natural. In spare bedrooms and sheds and from kitchen and dining room tables around the country, we are all going through these same emotions. But don’t you think it’s weird how all of us have by now, pretty much settled into a ‘new kind of normal’?

We humans, are very adaptable once we sort ourselves out and stop messing around and over-thinking things! So, we tend to settle down into our ‘new normal’ within a few weeks. But what’s normal?

There is more than one type of ‘new normal’

Which type you are, will dictate how well you survive in these challenging times. If that sounds a bit over the top, I promise you it isn’t and I’ll tell you why. First, let’s look at the strange scenario we find ourselves in:

During the first few days of lockdown, we were scared:

How is this even happening?”

Later that week, we were in denial:

“This can’t be happening.”

As we entered week two, we were in crisis and felt anger:

Why is this happening to my business?”

But now we are planning for the future:

“I’m not going to let my business fail.”

If this is you. Congratulations. You are type A.

You’ve been through the worry/denial/angry/in-crisis phases and are now pro-actively thinking of new ideas, planning for the future and staying visible. Your goal is to reach that golden moment when you can unlock the door to your estate agency premises again and greet actual real live customers. You’re working hard; you keep showing up on social media every day, you’re publishing top-notch content on your website, you’re promoting your business, getting involved with the community and making yourself known.

In an ideal world, this is precisely what every estate agent, in fact, every business should be doing right now.

But there’s another ‘new normal’ too. Let’s cast our minds back…

During the first few days of lockdown, we were scared:

How is this even happening?”

Later that week, we were in denial:

“This can’t be happening.”

As we entered week two, we were in crisis and felt anger:

Why is this happening to my business?”

Now we have become overwhelmed with the ‘not-knowing’, frustrated with being told to ‘pivot’, finding everything too challenging:

“I give up. It will only be a few weeks out. I’ll have a rest and pick up where I left off once lockdown is over.”

You sleep at night dreaming of the next box-set you’ll binge-watch on Netflix. After all, there’s nothing else to do all day.

You wake each morning already thinking about what you’ll eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Your day consists of pootling from sofa to fridge in your jim-jams, sporadically checking your emails when you remember.

This is type B.

You’re enjoying your time off, this unexpected, extended holiday and you firmly believe that when you next open the door to your premises, the phone will already be ringing and you will pick up exactly where you left off.

Sorry. That’s not going to happen.

People, yes, that’s your prospects, will quickly forget you. But, they are also easily swayed. That’s why it’s more important now than ever before that you don’t stay sleeping, and instead, you stay visible – online, on social media, in your community, with up to date content.

So, today, I’m asking you to be completely honest with yourself.

Which are you?

Will you be able to look back on this time and say you adapted, worked hard and did everything you could to ensure your business survived during COVID19.

Or will you look back and wish you had made use of the time more wisely.

Be honest. What’s your new normal?

Keep up-to-date
